Grade Point Average (GPA)

Academic standing at Messiah University is based on grades received, the numeric value of the grades, and the credit value of the courses.

The grade-point average is computed on all work for which a student registered, with the exceptions of courses with grades of I, W, WP, WF, and AU each of which carries no grade value.

Computation Of Grade-Point Average (GPA)

Overall and semester grade-point averages are calculated as follows:

  • Step A. Multiply the course credit hours by the quality point value to obtain total quality points for each course.
  • Step B. Add the total quality points for all courses.
  • Step C. Add the total credit hours for all courses attempted, with the exception of I, W, WP, WF, and AU.
  • Step D. Divide the total quality points earned by the total credit hours; i.e., Step B is divided by Step C.

The following grades are not computed in a student''s GPA: I, W, WP, WF, or AU. For an accurate GPA, input only A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and F.
